The governor of the province of Río Negro, Alberto Weretilneck, visited the Casa Rosada this morning and met with the deputy chief of the Cabinet of the Interior, Lisandro Catalán, to discuss the grave situation of fires in the region. Weretilneck requested financial assistance to combat the fires in his province, mentioning intentional fires that affected both Chubut and Río Negro, causing a significant negative impact in the area.
During the meeting, the governor emphasized the urgency of strengthening coordination between federal security forces, the Río Negro Police, and the Judiciary. Catalán committed to evaluating the request for economic assistance to address the situation and collaborate in controlling the active fire fronts in the region.
According to Weretilneck, over 4,000 hectares have burned in El Bolsón, 111 families have lost everything, and numerous public infrastructures and animals have suffered significant damage due to the fires. The governor detailed the devastating consequences for the local community, highlighting the urgency of acting promptly to contain the situation.
Regarding those arrested for the fires, Weretilneck mentioned that investigations are ongoing and that recent detentions of suspects reported by local residents have been carried out. Additionally, he pointed out that it is essential to determine the intent behind these fires and mentioned the importance of addressing the challenge posed by the defiant attitude of certain individuals toward the State.
On the other hand, it was reported that the National Fire Management System has deployed teams and resources to support in extinguishing the fires. More than 60 firefighters, 5 airplanes, and 4 helicopters have been offered, working in collaboration with federal forces from other provinces.
Finally, the governor ruled out the possibility of economic interests in the affected areas, explaining that it is a protected natural area. He also insisted that the fires are intentional in nature and emphasized the importance of addressing this situation in a coordinated and effective manner to protect the community and preserve the environment.
